Coloradoans know the advantages of a high-country playground, and one such benefit is the elevation of the Summit County ski resorts. With that high elevation comes plentiful dry powder snow, and at a summit elevation of 13,050 feet, Arapahoe Basin ski resort is known for one of the longest ski and ride seasons in North America. This resort opens in October and operates until mid-June, sometimes even to July 4th. Memorial Day celebratory events are the norm, and locals and visitors love the famed beach at the base of the mountain for soaking up the Colorado sun. With half of the mountain above timberline, the views are something to see. There is steep terrain for the experts, runs for the mogul masters, open intermediate bowls and a learning area for the novices at this smaller resort of 960 acres and eight lifts. Arapahoe Basin (also known as A-Basin) will provide thrills and chills for all who come. With a local feel that visitors love, this resort offers close-in parking, a ski and rental shop, on-mountain dining and live entertainment at the base lodge. There are no hotels or rental properties here but visitors can stay at the nearby Keystone Resort (5 miles away) and ride a free bus right into the A-Basin parking lot.
