With gyms, group classes, yoga studios, spin studios and other various fitness outlets shut down during the coronavirus pandemic, many of us are left looking for ways to stay in shape. Research shows that being sedentary is bad for your physical and mental health, so staying active during this time is important. Exercise and physical activity keeps your immune system working effectively by flushing bacteria from the lungs and airways, increasing white blood cell circulation and raising body temperature — all of which help the body fight infection and stay healthy. I have compiled a list of ways our Summit County community can stay in shape during the shutdown.
Do bodyweight exercises
Bodyweight exercises are a great way to stay toned with limited resources. Great bodyweight exercises include:
- push-ups (all variations: wide-set, diamond, staggered, etc.)
- wall sits
A door frame pull-up bar is a great tool. Just make sure you fasten the bar securely — hospitals are busy enough these days. Nikki LaRochelle, a strength and conditioning coach at the Breckenridge Recreation Center, gives us a sample stay-at-home circuit exercise in this Summit Daily story.

Go on a run, walk, hike or bike ride
I'm sure most of us are looking for any excuse to go outside and get some fresh air. Even if you can get outside only for an easy walk, walking has been shown to be almost as effective as running. If you want to step up your game, find some stairs or a steep hill to run or sprint up. It's a good way to really get your cardio in during this pandemic. All these exercises allow you to be outside without necessarily coming into close contact with other people. Since all ski areas have been ordered to shut down, pull out your snowshoes or touring equipment to take a hike up a mountain and ski or ride down — just be sure to avoid the local ski areas, which all have prohibited uphill access.
Make sure to stay safe in the backcountry and know your regional forecast. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center releases its avalanche forecasts by 4:30 p.m. for the following day. You also can stay update to date with the CAIC's daily snow forecasts on their Facebook and Instagram pages. Remember that although Colorado and Summit County are planning to loosen restrictions, it's still important to remain close to home and in your county when going outdoors.

With all gyms and fitness studios required to be closed during the coronavirus shutdown. Many studios are adapting their business practices by offering live-stream and online fitness classes that you can do from the comfort of your own home.
Barre Forte Summit County owner, Katelyn Hudson, has put together an online version of classes where she or other instructors teach virtually. Classes are live or available to be replayed, which allows for some flexibility. The easiest way to sign up for a class is through Mind Body, where you can see the class schedule and pricing. Katelyn also says another way to see the schedule, purchase a class or purchase a membership is through this link. Barre Forte Summit County's current offerings are $8 per class, a five-pack concession card for $40 or a 10-pack concession card for $80. They also are offering one month of unlimited classes memberships for $100, including online classes and in-studio classes once they reopen.
"Generally, I think doing some sort of movement every day that you enjoy — whether that be a walk, run, virtual fitness class, or some free flow yoga — is really important for protecting both your mental and physical health at the time like this," instructor Taylor Sienkiewicz said.

Put together by some of your favorite staff members at Silverthorne Recreation Center, these videos include yoga, ballet, jazz, hip hop and cardio classes. If you are looking for something new and fun to do, the Silverthorne Recreation Center has you covered. The best part about it is that the videos are free to watch. The toilet paper workout with Renee just might be my favorite fitness workout.

Age is just a number, and it is never too late to get fit and build strength and balance with SilverSneakers
SilverSneakers is available at no cost for adults 65 and older on participating Medicare plans. You can work out at home on your own time with SilverSneakers on-demand video library of classes, workouts and how-to-videos. The Breckenridge Recreation Center is also offering free virtual SilverSneakers exercises classes available live-streamed on Facebook. SilverSneakers also has an instant eligibility check on its website to see if a member is a part of your Medicare plan. You'll also have access to nutrition workshops and a fitness app to access programs on the go or track and schedule activities.
Meta Yoga Studio is offering a new schedule of Facebook and Instagram classes every week with access to past recordings and classes on their Facebook page. Meta Yoga Studios in Breckenridge is the oldest yoga studio in Summit County and delivers a variety of yoga, wellness and fitness classes for everybody and every level.
"Keep a routine from day to day. Compliment with a healthy diet. Find an accountability partner. Remember to take rest days," Meta Yoga Studios owner Kimberly Ghorai said.
